Teenage Diaries

Since 1996, the Teenage Diaries series has been giving tape recorders to young people around the country to report on their own lives. They conduct interviews, keep an audio journal and record the sounds of daily life—usually collecting more than 40 hours of raw tape over the course of a year.

We work with each diarist to edit all the material into documentaries for National Public Radio's All Things Considered.

Josh in New York City: Growing Up with Tourette's, February 17, 2006
Reviewer: girijad83 from India

The entry that I reviewed in this podcast had the title as above. It was an amazing podcast, and it touched me especially because I also do social work in the mental health industry.

This podcast was recorded by 16 year old Josh who has Tourette’s syndrome, which is a neurological disorder causing involuntary movements or tics and sudden uncontrolled verbal outbursts. An estimated 100,000 people in the US suffer from this ailment, each with varying intensities. Josh talks about his daily routine and how he seems just like any other ‘normal’ kid. He explains how the tics feel like a big balloon growing inside his stomach if he doesn’t release them.

This podcast has a very innovative approach in helping others find out, learn about, and relate to other people’s problems. It also has a secondary advantage for the people actually talking about their lives as it provides them with emotional relief. A must listen to for people of all ages!!!

The audio quality is as good as a tape recorder can record, meaning that it’s clearly audible.
