This story about the British Admiral, William Bligh, takes place in 1789 when Bligh is captain of the Bounty. While returning from a voyage to Tahiti to transport Breadfruit trees, some of his sailors mutiny. Bligh and a few loyal men are placed in a rowboat and set adrift to navigate more than 3,000 miles of ocean.

Although Bligh survives the mutiny experience and builds a memorable career, he is remembered most for his difficult temper in dealing with people. The book will give your students an opportunity to study his personality and decide whether they would have counted themselves among the mutineers.

This book serves as a geography lesson as well, with vivid maps of the world that trace each leg of Bligh’s journey. The reader is introduced to the people and topography of Tahiti.

Our story draws on many sources, including Bligh’s own journals, biographies and historical fiction such as Mutiny on the Bounty by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall (1932).
